Small Town Dynasty Kennels: Pocket American Bully Breeder in Washington

State your name, your kennel, and where your kennel is located.
We are Small Town Dynasty Kennels, owned by Jeremy and Megan Garretson, located in Washington state. 

What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed?
Here at Small Town Dynasty we breed American Bullies, primarily Pocket Class. It was hands down Venom Line and the Extreme Pocket look that grabbed my attention and made me say, "I have to have one!" 

What is your favorite bloodline?
For us, it definitely has to have a Ped that leads to Dax. He's the Dog Father (Godfather) of it all in my opinion. So we follow and include a lot of bulls and Lines that sprang off of him such as Louis V Line, Lucky Line, VenomLine, Chumper, and so on. 

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a responsible dog breeder?
For me, it has to start with a genuine love for these dogs. It can't always be a decision based on profit, it should first be about advancing the vision and contributing to the breed as a whole. But I'm the last one to judge the next man or kennel for chasing their vision, whatever that may be. So to each their own.   

What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?
Honestly, we've been through a few different brands of food and played with different diets, but we've settled on Royal Canin dry dog food.

How many times a day do you feed your dogs?
These bullies eat every morning and evening.

How do you keep your dogs in shape throughout the year?
Small Town Dynasty Kennels is located on a 2.5 acre fenced homestead which provides plenty of room for everybody to run, play, and investigate. 

Walk us through the process of purchasing a pup from Small Town Dynasty Kennels from start to finish.
We are a very easy going group, so we try to keep the process pretty down-to-earth and straight forward: 

• We do every deal and agreement through a contract, and like other kennels, we take deposits to lock in particular picks of the litter. 
• Picks will be made around 7 weeks and ready to go to their new homes at 8 weeks. 
• All puppies leave our care with a clear Vet Health Certificate as well as UTD on all shots and dewormings. 
• And we do reserve the right to refuse service and sales to anyone. Meaning that if I suspect that an individual will not give the kind of care that I believe these dogs deserve, we will keep a pup before sending it into an unfit or unsafe situation.    

Do you currently show any of your dogs?
Small Town Dynasty Kennels and our family all go to the shows and show off our fur babies! We are at every local Northwest show, and we try to catch as many as we can, (job and school permitting). 

What advice does Small Town Dynasty Kennels have for any upcoming breeders?
Have an account set up with the money ready for all the breeding costs such as: progesterone tests (multiple), semen evaluation (if your own stud), stud fees (if not your stud), A.I. or Surgical, confirmation, x-rays, C-Section, and whelping. If you can’t cover these costs from the start, then you aren't prepared and you're not ready to start breeding.  Also be prepared to take a loss. Litters don't always take, pups don't always make it, and sales don't always come through. No one gets blockbuster numbers out of the gate. The truth is, I paid more for my foundation pups than I have ever made off of any sales from their litters. This isn't the get rich move some think it is, it has to be based on the love of the breed or you're gonna hate your life and quit after a couple losses. 

What do you think is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?
Honestly, the hardest part is probably coming to terms with the amount of work that this really takes. It's amazing, and if done for the right reasons, it's lots of fun. But don't get confused, this is a lot of work. The dogs, the shows, the investments, the promotion, the breedings, the whelping, it's all work, a lot of work. 

How do you think they can overcome this thing?

We can overcome this by loving your job. Once you love your job, it's no longer work. 

Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?
I look up to a lot of other breeders and bully people. But I would have to say I definitely watch and follow Matt Siebenthal and Nate over at VenomLine and NMG Bullies. Matt and Nate have always been quick to answer any of my questions and cool enough to share advice and experiences that help keep me on track. I must mention Lowell Urwin of Bully Empire from Boise Idaho and FW Spielberg with BABC. These guys are a major source of encouragement to me and many others.  I appreciate their friendship and all of the advice and love they share continually. 

Tell us about one of Small Town Dynasty Kennels main goals for 2022.
2022 is gonna be a big year for Small Town Dynasty. We have some new blood coming of age and ready to come out and make some noise. Also have a couple awaited breedings that are about to finally go down. Super excited. It's hard sometimes to not announce everything, but we wanted to keep a few surprises up our sleeves. So stay tuned, and enjoy the great things to come with us! 

Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed community, to be 10 years from now.
I would scream for unity! Let's work together and network more. Remember when and where you began, and remember to show love to the ones that are in that stage today. It doesn't cost anything to answer a few questions from new breeders who are thirsty for knowledge.  

What separates Small Town Dynasty Kennels from the competition?
At Small Town Dynasty, you will always get what you see and see what you get. I pride myself on being a man of my word. I treat every person, from the smallest to the biggest and the unknowns between, with the same respect and consideration. We stand by our word, our kennel, and our productions. Our dogs are family. 

What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?
My family and I work with a few Native American non-profit organizations. My role is a Reentry Program Manager. I work with the people who are released from prison helping them get adjusted and to become successful in the community. I also go into Washington's prison system and ensure that all the incarcerated Native Americans are receiving access to religious services and their Rights are being met. Admittedly, I am formerly incarcerated myself, so I am very passionate about ensuring everyone still behind those walls are being provided for and that they know they are not forgotten.

We are definitely fans of Bully Girl Magazine! I've seen many features that helped me discover new kennels and get acquainted with the story behind many of the bullies I've been following. You guys do an awesome job of promotion and storytelling. Love it.
