Chucktown Bulliez: XL American Bully Breeder in South Carolina

State your name, your kennel, and where your kennel is located.

My name is Steve Jones. My kennel is Chucktown Bulliez, located right outside of Charleston, South Carolina.

What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed?

Here at Chucktown Bulliez, we breed XL American Bullies. My inspiration in having an XL champ stems from my love for the breed. The size, power, and athleticism behind the XL is unmatched. Their temperament and loyalty is second to none.

What is your favorite bloodline?

My favorite bloodline is not established yet. Ask me that question again in six years.

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a responsible dog breeder?

I feel a responsible breeder puts the welfare of their dogs above monetary value. I also feel a responsible breeder should be there for their clients to answer any questions or help out as much as possible. Most importantly I feel decisions on breedings should be to better the breed, not to chase big named kennels or hype.

What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?

I keep my dogs on a mixture of kibble and raw.

Are there any specific brands of dog food that you recommend?

The only two brands that I feed my dogs are Victor and Diamond Pro 89.

How many times a day do you feed your dogs?

My adult dogs are fed twice daily and puppies are fed three times a day.

How do you keep your dogs in shape throughout the year?

I do my best to walk my dogs daily. Sticking to a strict diet helps throughout the year. We also use tools like a flirt pole, spring pole, and a frame.

Walk us through the process of purchasing a pup from Chucktown Bulliez from start to finish.

• The beginning of a journey to owning one of our puppies starts with a message or a phone call.
• All potential clients are vetted and home checks are done as thorough

 as possible.

• Once I feel that the potential client is a good match, we discuss and go over our contract.
• After the puppy is 10 weeks of age, he/she is ready to go to their new home and live what we expect to be a long happy life. But the process isn’t over at pickup. We are here to answer any questions and help out anyway possible for our new family members.

Do you currently show any of your dogs?

Yes, we have two dogs that we currently show. (Chucktown Bulliez’s Freya and 2nd2Nun’s Floki of Chucktown Bulliez). We also have two more that are in training.

What advice does Chucktown Bulliez have for any upcoming breeders?

To any upcoming breeders I would say research any breed that you are wanting to get involved with. Find a good mentor and stick to health, temperament, and structure. Color and mass can always be added later. Stay humble and if you take care of these bullies they will take care of you.

What do you think is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?

I think the most difficult thing in the bully game for people to overcome is realizing that if we came together, built a community, and networked instead of bashing the next kennel, the breed as a whole would be a lot further along than what it is now.

How do you think they can overcome this thing?

I think this can be overcome by networking and focusing on creating a dog that meets the standard. But, at the same time realizing that your vision may not be the same as the next person’s vision. And here’s some free gain, if you help your local kennels build and stop looking at them as competition you’ll not only better your state, but you will create a pool of well built bullies that you can pull from to better your champ along the way.

Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?

There are three people that I have to say I look up to in the bully game. First is Danny Cervantes, because he is one of the realest people I’ve met. Whether or not he knows it, he’s been a mentor to me. The things he does for the XL community are above and beyond, he is just an all around good person.

Second, I would say is Fred Duran. This is because of the accomplishments he has made with GRand CHampion Dually, his ability to keep his composure, and the fact he is truly a genuine person.

Last but not least, Mr. Ron Ramos for being a true OG. 

Tell us about one of Chucktown Bulliez main goals for 2022. 

My biggest goal for the remainder of 2022 is to focus on our upcoming show the Chucktown Bully Bash Vol. 2 and making it a success. 

Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed Community, to be 10 years from now.

In 10 years from now, I’d like to see more people breeding towards the standard with the aim of producing healthy show quality bullies with good temperament.

What separates Chucktown Bulliez from the competition?

I think the thing that separates us from other XL breeders is mainly my vision for creating a healthy, clean, true XL.

What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?

My world revolves around dogs. Whether it’s preparing for shows, working with the dogs in my yard, or lining up breedings, my family and I have dedicated ourselves to creating the next chapter in the bully world.

I like how the magazine gives good exposure to kennels and I think it’s the best bully magazine out there.
