Sellers American Bullies: American Bully Breeder in North Carolina

State your name, your kennel, and where your kennel is located.
My name is Mark Sellers. I own Sellers American Bullies, also known as SAB Kennels. The kennel is located in Asheboro, NC.
What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed?
I breed American Bullies. My cousin inspired me to get involved with this breed when I went to his house and saw his American Bullies for the first time. It was amazing how compact and muscular the dogs were, so I went home to research. That’s when I came across Remy Martin and Cairo and have been hooked ever since.
What is your favorite bloodline?
I am a big fan of the Dax bloodline and the different strands from that line.
In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a responsible dog breeder?
Responsible dog breeders should have a great work ethic, be willing to learn through research, be open to experienced breeders’ advice, be dedicated to their dogs, and be persistent. But, of course, things don’t always go as planned, especially with a business and breeding, so you have to be able to roll with it and keep going.
What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?
I feed my dogs a fish and rice-based kibble diet throughout the year.
How many times a day do you feed your dogs?
I feed my adult dogs twice a day and puppies on demand.
How do you keep your dogs in shape throughout the year?
The dogs stay in shape by going on routine walks, a lot of playtime, and I love to use a spring pole.
Walk us through the process of purchasing a pup from Sellers American Bullies from start to finish.
- When a potential customer contacts me, the first thing I do is set up a time to video chat. This chat allows me to get to know the customer and ask and answer questions to see if one of our pups would be a good fit for that home.
- I recommend and welcome potential customers to come to my yard and see the dogs and pups in person.
- Next, I need a deposit to be made on the puppy of your choice. During this time and at the appropriate age, the puppies will receive vet checks and vaccinations.
- Once the paperwork is in hand, customers can come to pick their pup up in person or have it shipped right to their front door.
- We like to stay in contact with everyone who joins the SAB family to keep track of the puppy’s development and answer any questions they may have throughout the pup’s lifetime.
Do you currently show any of your dogs?
Yes, I attend ABKC sanctioned shows and have earned ribbons with several of my dogs. I am also working to better my kennel and look forward to entering the ring with a few of my up-and-comers this year.
What advice does Sellers American Bullies have for any upcoming breeders?
My best advice for upcoming breeders would be to take your time, do your research, and buy good, healthy foundation stock from a reputable breeder.
What do you think is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?
Kennel blindness is one of the most difficult things to overcome in the bully game. It is tough to look at a dog you have raised and cared for since a pup and determine that it is a pet quality dog and should not be bred.
How do you think they can overcome this thing?
I think that it starts with being true to yourself and your program. Then, by selectively breeding the best dogs you can, the breed will progress and become better.
Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?
I have to say the late Ed Shepherd is my inspiration because of his contribution to the Dax and American Bully breed. He set the groundwork for us to enjoy the beautiful dogs that we have today.
Tell us about one of Sellers American Bullies main goals for 2022.
My main goal for the upcoming year is to continue competing in dog shows and bring home my first championship title with one of my productions. I have been putting in a lot of hard work over the past few years and am excited to see what 2022 brings.
Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed Community, to be 10 years from now.
Ten years from now, I would like to see the breed continue to progress. It would be great to see the breed on a national stage and even compete in the Westminster show one day.
What separates Sellers American Bullies from the competition?
What separates us from other kennels is that we do not need hype or color chase. Instead, we try to produce show-quality bullies with each litter and focus on the breed standards.
What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?
I love spending time with my wife and two boys. We enjoy riding ATVs, traveling to new places, and grilling out whenever we can.
What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine?
Bully Girl Magazine does an amazing job representing the bully breed. In addition, they provide an excellent source for breeders and enthusiasts to connect and get all their bully content!
