State your name, your kennel, and where your kennel is located.

My name is DeQuann Jackson of Bully Avenue and Big Screen Exotics. We are operating out of Detroit, Michigan.

What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed? 

Per the Exotics Kennel Club registry standard, we breed Exotics, specifically the Exotic Bully and the American Exotic. I have been breeding exotics for four years now. The look of the exotics and the creative culture of this breed inspire and motivate me to follow my vision and produce an excellent bloodline.

What is your favorite bloodline? 

I have blended three blood types: Bullsace, Bape, and Devilspit. I wanted to create a bloodline with specific traits that I admired from each. My latest studs, Harlem Knight and Bullrito, are inbred and linebred with these different strains of blood, and I will use these boys to continue to push for my unique program. I also produced both of their mothers Qleopatra Sims and Della Reese. They were littermate sisters from my breeding of Bape to my Bullsace daughter Bulla de Vil. She was my first ever exotic.

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a responsible dog breeder?

Having morality and discipline are the main characteristics needed to be a responsible breeder. The discipline to stick to your vision and the moral consciousness to keep the dogs as healthy as possible while still trying to create a unique dog without cutting corners.

What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year? 

I feed my dogs a blend of kibble and ground turkey daily with added supplements like coconut oil and vitamins.  We also do a one-day fast once a week.

How many times a day do you feed your dogs?

We free feed the puppies until they are eight months old. After that, they are fed once a day.

How do you keep your dogs in shape throughout the year? 

We give the dogs daily exercise. They enjoy running and playing with the other dogs. Because of their high protein, high-fat diet builds a great physique and is very fit.

Walk us through the process of purchasing a pup from Bully Avenue and Big Screen Exotics from start to finish. 

1. When I have a puppy available, I research the buyer to find out if they are a breeder themselves or just a fan of the breed that wants a pet. 
2. That will determine the quality of the dog and the price range I will present to them. 
3. Once those details have been determined, we settle on the price and lock in the deposit. 
4. Not until eight weeks or older can they pick up their pup or have it shipped by a trusted and experienced pet nanny picked by the buyer.

Do you currently show any of your dogs? 

Yes, we have shown in exotic classes and have been successful. However, our number one goal is to focus on breeding and creating bulls with our signature look for our consumer base.

What advice does Bully Avenue and Big Screen Exotics have for any upcoming breeders? 

Understand that this is not a hobby but a lifestyle. To be successful, you have to do it with your whole heart. This is a business, and you have to treat it as such. Great dogs can make you popular, but great customer service will take you to unimaginable places.

What do you think is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome? 

It is difficult for people to stick to their vision. Every day a new look or bloodline becomes the cash cow, and if you are not focused, you will find yourself switching up your dogs yearly. That only breeds inconsistency which will be the downfall to your program. Customers want consistency as much as possible and want to know what they get when they come to you. You can’t do that if you keep breeding in different directions too often.

How do you think they can overcome this thing? 

Overcome these challenges by surrounding yourself with people who have the same vision and motivation. Then, if you start to go astray, you have a partner to encourage you to get back on track.

Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why? 

I look up to all the yards that have been breeding what they love consistently, no matter what trends arise. Yes, it’s ok to add the new hot blood to your program because it’s business too, but we should always be able to see your signature somewhere in it. I look up to the innovators. My wife, Kianca Jackson, my partners Dada Mills, Damian Thomas, Vino Smith, and Hardwerk are all innovators. I also have a close mentor Joseph Council of Heman Kennels that keeps me on my toes.

Tell us about one of Bully Avenue and Big Screen Exotics main goals for 2022. 

To create a new wave with my newest superstar, stud BULLRITO. I want to show the exotic world and that you can have a dog with a complete and healthy wow factor.

Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed Community, to be 10 years from now. 

To still be enjoyable and diverse. The exotic community has so many different races and backgrounds involved that I love to see them come together for one shared love: the dogs.

What separates Bully Avenue and Big Screen Exotics from the competition? 

What separates us is our confidence, promotion, and understanding of what a real hitter has to have. It’s not just about one trait that makes a dog a star, and most don’t grasp that understanding. That’s why this is so competitive, and I love competition.

What other hobbies or interests do you take part in? 

I only have passions, no hobbies. Exotics are my passion. Dogs are my passion.
